Stifado – Greek Beef Stew

Stifado is a classic Greek dish with distinct flavors of tomato, onion and cinnamon.


  • Prep Time: 20 min Cooking Time: 2-3 hours

  • 4 servings

  • 700 g of beef (chuck roll)
  • 2 yellow onions
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 400 g crushed tomatoes
  • 2 dl red wine
  • 3 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 meat bouillon cube
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of oregano
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 cloves
  • Salt & pepper
  • Olive oil

Cut the onion into large pieces and chop/press the garlic cloves. Cut the meat into pieces. Brown the meat in oil until nicely browned.

Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onion starts to become translucent. Pour in crushed tomatoes, red wine, vinegar and possibly water so that it covers the pieces of meat.

Add the stock cube, sugar, oregano, bay leaf, cinnamon stick and cloves.

Cook for 2-3 hours until the meat is tender and stringy.

Season with salt & pepper. Serve with potato wedges
